Jesus the Way to the Father

JN 14:1-12

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.”Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father."

The Blessed Virgin Mary (Feast Day January 1)

Mary is the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. She was conceived without sin to her parents St. Joachim and St. Anne, and she was married to St. Joseph. The Church celebrates the following events of her life: her Immaculate Conception (December 8), the visit by the angel Gabriel, who told her she would become Jesus’ mother (March 25), her visit to her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist (May 31), and her Assumption into heaven (August 15).
All of these are celebrated as feast days in the liturgical year. Mary is our spiritual Mother and is considered the Queen of Heaven. Mary prays on our behalf to her son Jesus. She is the patron saint of all humanity.

Take time to chat

  • What did Jesus mean when he said, "whoever has seen me has seen the Father"?
  • If Jesus were to say to you today, "Do not let your hearts be troubled," what would that mean to you?
  • Today is Mother's Day. Think about your mom or the Blessed Mother, and share something for which you are thankful.

Recipe of the week

Lemon Bars

For Base
2 cups sifted flour
½ cup powdered sugar

1 cup butter, softened

For Top
4 large beaten eggs
2 cups white sugar
½ cup lemon juice
¼ cup flour
½ teaspoon baking powder

Lemon rind from entire lemon

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 9x13 pan with aluminum foil (enough to have some cover over the long edges). Spray the aluminum foil.  Set aside. For the base, mix the butter into the flour and powdered sugar. Mix with hands until it clings together. Press into the foiled pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned. While the base is baking, beat eggs for 4 to 5 minutes for the filling. Then, add the sugar, lemon juice, and lemon rind, and beat just until mixed (about 30 seconds to 1 minute). Sift together flour and baking powder. Stir into egg mixture. Pour over baked crust. (Pour it directly on the hot crust that comes out of the oven.)  Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes. Cool. Tip: Once cooled, cover and put in the refrigerator. Once cold, pull the pan out of the refrigerator. Pull the foil (which is stuck to the bars) out of the pan. Pull the foil away from the sides of the bars. Use a pizza cutter to cut the bars easily. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!

Family Fun

Fun Activities with Mom

  • Take your mom or grandma on a scavenger hunt that leads to her favorite places throughout the day, like church, a coffee shop, a café for lunch, or a spot in the park. At each place, she gets a note, drawing, or letter from a different member of the family telling her how much they love her. The kids get to be involved by making something for mom and getting to surprise her with these notes. Plus, the whole family gets to go on an adventure too!
  • Alternatively, create a family "photo booth" picture session. Set up an area for the photo session. Create a background with sheets, table clothes, or just use a blank wall. Have each family member collect items to contribute for people to wear, hold, or use in their pictures. People can take pictures on their phones or with their cameras. Be sure to share them with others and on social media using #52Sundays. Pictures can be goofy, silly, or serious. If you have a wireless printer, get some photo paper and use an app, like Pic Stitch, to print out pictures that look like they came from a real photo booth. You can also frame the pictures to remember your fun day!

Family Prayer

The Magnificat

Pray the Magnificat together. This is the canticle of Mary. In Scripture, the hymn is found after the jubilant meeting of Mary, pregnant with Jesus, and her relative Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist. Recite the prayer or find a sung version of the prayer.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of His servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.
