The Baptism of Jesus

MT 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?”Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Saint Gregory Nazianzen (Feast Day January 14th)

325 - 390

St. Gregory Nazianzen was a 4th century Christian bishop of Constantinople.  He lived in a tumultuous time when false teachings about the divinity of Jesus and the divinity of the Holy Spirit were circulating in the Church. St. Gregory defended the truth about the divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit and was called to rebuild the faith in the great see of Constantinople which had been exposed to these false teachings for three decades. St. Gregory is a Doctor of the Church, which is a title given to saints recognized as having made significant contribution to theology or doctrine through their research, study, or writing.

What if there was a place to take your family away from the world for a few days, to reconnect with God and have fun - together? Consider attending Holy Family Fest, a week-long Catholic family vacation at Catholic Familyland®, where each member of your family will be drawn to a life-changing encounter with Jesus that makes their faith come alive. Family Prayer

Gather your children’s baptismal candles and light them during the prayer. Place a small bowl of holy water on the table. Choose a leader for the prayer.

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Loving God, you created all the people of the world, and you know each of us by name. We thank you for the gift of baptism and for making us a part of your family. Bless us with your love and friendship that we may grow in wisdom, knowledge, and grace. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven . . . Amen.

Leader will then use the holy water to trace the sign of the cross on the forehead of each family member.

"But in the last half century, even as the western world has become increasingly secularized and countless people have abandoned the faith into which they were baptized, the Church has been ringing out a call for all Catholics to awaken to their baptismal identity as missionary disciples. All are being summoned to engage in a new evangelization—a renewed proclamation of the good news of Christ to the people of our time.”(3.1 The Missionary Nature of the Church)

Why was Jesus Baptized? "Jesus loaded the burden of all mankind’s guilt upon his shoulders; he bore it down into the depths of the Jordan. He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into the place of sinners. His inaugural gesture is in anticipation of the Cross.”(Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Jesus of Nazareth)
